JKUAT Spearheading the initiative of giving back
The JKUAT Main campus early this year, 2022, established an initiative to give back to the community.
This initiative recognizes the campus’ growth of a sports and recreation hub in the region. Honoring the attributes of the Director of Sports Dr. Peter Waweru Kamaku, exemplifies exceptional service and dedication to the basketball fraternity in the community. Their consistent support to the KSBC League demonstrates genuine care and support for growth of the game of basketball. This dedication is characterized by 24 men’s teams and 6 ladies’ teams who participate in the year-long league. The continued engagement depicts overall improvement of the department and an understanding, passion and appreciation for the objectives laid out by the JKUAT Sports department.
“I believe JKUAT’s sports recreation program for giving back to the community to be the epitome of sports development in the country. I believe years down the road when we look back, we shall marvel and say we have made everyone proud,” said Mary (JKUAT Lynx Coach)
The KSBC league views JKUAT as a home for growth and nurturing talent. With the best gift to our community being the basketball court. It also uplifts the alumni and the youth in the region, enabling nurturing of talent and building of a stronger community.
For the League, basketball is more than the game itself. It’s about strengthening families, friendships, preparing the youth for success through sports and consistent networking, which in turn advances employment and income opportunities.
KSBC League was founded in 2018 and one of the main challenges we have had is the access to basketball courts. JKUAT’s Sports department answered this call and offered up their basketball courts.
We believe this is one great perk about giving back to communities.
JKUAT Campus giving back is one of the vital ways to make a meaningful difference while integrating skills and interest in the game of basketball which is an incredibly rewarding experience.
The JKUAT students and alumni volunteer a great deal in the league. We measure it as a form of self-care, which is vital to help avoid burnout from other areas like the workplace and school. The regular gathering over the weekends at the basketball court promotes social connection and allows us to experience empathy. Additionally, healthy social connections foster long term positive mental and physical health outcomes.
What Does the Future Hold?
Now that JKUAT Campus has opened doors for basketball development, one thing is for sure. The giving back model will be emulated. We believe in growth & nurturing of talent. KSBC League will continue to engage with JKUAT’s Sports department in this endeavor.
