Whitney’s dedication to her craft is apparent in her unwavering commitment to enhancing her knowledge and refining her skills. By participating in various physical and online referee training sessions, she ensures that she remains at the top of her game. “I make it a point to attend all referee training sessions, whether in person or online,” she reveals. “The OWQLO app has been extremely helpful, offering insights from African and NBA referees.” Her passion for basketball goes beyond formal training; Whitney immerses herself in the sport through regular game-watching and thorough study of the rulebook. “YouTube has been an invaluable resource in my journey,” she notes. “I frequently watch basketball games to deepen my understanding of different fouls and violations.”

Inspiration and Mentorship

Along her path, Whitney found inspiration in Erick Otieno, the vice president of KBRA. Their encounter left a lasting impact, motivating her to refine her skills and strive for international recognition. “He spurred me on to work harder in order to reach the international stage,” she recalls.Drawing from her personal journey, Whitney is passionate about empowering other girls interested in pursuing a career in refereeing. “I aim to be a mentor and role model for more women, encouraging them to believe in themselves and enter the world of officiating,” she asserts. “Because I firmly believe that the future belongs to women.”

A Bright Future Awaits

Recently, Whitney participated in the All Women Referees clinic in Nairobi, further expanding her knowledge of the sport and honing her officiating abilities. Her dedication, alongside distinguished female referees like Wendy Mumbi, Ann Nekesa, and Susan Ndichu, who have also previously volunteered for the KSBC League, underscores the growing prominence of women in Kenyan basketball officiating. With her unyielding work ethic, promising future, and commitment to empowering other women in the field, Whitney Mbeneka embodies resilience and determination in the pursuit of excellence. As she continues to shatter barriers and ascend to greater heights, her journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance in the realm of sports officiating.
